When looking for a name for the Festival the organisers asked Shirley for suggestions as she was compiling an aboriginal language dictionary for the area at that time. From a number of suggestions Yag'ubi was chosen as it meant "come along" and that was what they wanted people to do.
They also felt it was a significant way to pay respect to the local traditional owners of the land and the association's objectives include participation in the reconciliation process, to celebrate all cultures and cultural traditions and acknowledge that cultural diversity enriches our communities. The name also serves to remind people of those involved in the creation of the festival and the ones who are no longer with us.
The hands logo artwork was created and drawn by contemporary Aboriginal artist Fiona Foley and given to Yag'ubi to use which we have done. The design is used for t-shirts, our letterhead and other official documents.
Yag'ubi is a multicultural festival that seeks to celebrate and promote the spirit of multiculturalism through the sharing of music, art, food and ideas. Today Yag'ubi provides a special opportunity for the region to experience, share and enjoy everything our nation represents.
